Math Minds: Transforming Mathematics Education
Description
The Centre for Mathematics Education (CME) at the Fields Institute is pleased to welcome:
Dr. Brent Davis, Distinguished Research Chair in Mathematics Education, University of Calgary, is the Principal Investigator of Math Minds, a research partnership with the goal of improving mathematics instruction at the elementary level.
The Math Minds initiative addresses current challenges in mathematics education by stepping beyond the polarity of the math wars, with strong results. We invite school district leaders and administrators to hear from those working on the project and to engage in conversation about how we can impact mathematics teaching and learning on a larger scale.
Accompanying Dr. Davis are:
- Dr. John Mighton, Founder of JUMP Math)
- Dr. Tracy Solomon, Developmental Psychologist and Health Systems Research Scientist
- Dr. Dragana Martinovic, The CME Co-Director, Professor of Mathematics Education, University of Windsor
About Math Minds
Math Minds is a partnership involving Calgary Catholic School District, Golden Hills School Division, University of Calgary and JUMP Math, sponsored by Suncor Energy Foundation. The goal is to improve mathematics instruction at the elementary level.
Working over a period of 6 years, the Math Minds team has developed a set of strategies that steps outside current debates about student vs. teacher-centered classrooms, discovery vs. directed teaching, procedural vs. conceptual learning, and individual vs. group approaches to classroom organization. The results, backed up with rigorous research data, are strong and include:
• Sustained improvement in performance in mathematics with a particular positive impact on conceptual understanding and problem solving
• Improvement in students' confidence in and enjoyment of mathematics
The goal of this day-long professional learning event is to inform and provide opportunities for a robust Math Minds model to be introduced across Ontario learning communities.
Benefits of participation include:
• Learning about the distinct features and impact of the Math Minds Program;
• Connecting with the Math Minds team and exploring possibilities for bringing this learning model to your school board/faculty of education;
• Networking with educational leaders, researchers, and policy makers.
This event is geared toward Ontario researchers, school and board administrators, and policymakers.
