Title: Humanistic Mathematics: A journal, a philosophy, a community?
Abstract: In January 2011, the new Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
will debut with its inaugural issue. This is a culmination of the
collaborative efforts of many people, and as an open-access journal,
we hope that JHM will reach many more. In this talk I will describe
our experience so far with the journal from its inception, through
the various intermediate stages, to the current day, our conception
of humanistic mathematics, and what we hope to do with the journal.
Along the way I will offer (necessarily tentative) answers to the
following questions: Why are we doing what we are doing? What does
the current world of humanistic mathematics look like? What do we
mean by humanistic mathematics anyway?
Bio: Gizem Karaali completed her undergraduate studies in electrical
engineering and mathematics at Bogaziçi University, Istanbul,
Turkey. After receiving her PhD in Mathematics from the University
of California Berkeley, she taught at the University of California
Santa Barbara for two years. She is currently employed as a mathematician
at Pomona College where she enjoys teaching a wide variety of courses
and working with many interesting people. Gizem is one of the founding
editors of the new Journal of Humanistic Mathematics and is a Sepia
Dot (a 2006 Project NExT fellow).

Abstract: Kids' drawings of mathematicians at work, media images,
and the human side of "who's a mathematician?"

ON)
Title: Students getting a voice!
Abstract: Pictures that students from elementary school to university
level, have drawn about their vision of what a mathematician does
at work; videos of high school students talking about mathematicians
and answering what they think humanistic mathematics might be.
