It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the Fifth
Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC) Data Assimilation
(SPARC-DA5) workshop, in Toronto, the Canada during Sept.
4-7, 2007. This workshop will held jointly with the SPARC
International Polar Year workshop. Data assimilation
will be the focus of the first three days (4-6 Sept.), while IPY
will be the focus during 6-7 Sept. One day (Sept. 6) will be in

The goal of the SPARC-DA5 workshop is to motivate and better understand
data assimilation through the science of the middle atmosphere.
Data assimilation requires a knowledge of measurement and model
errors which, in turn, require knowledge of the true underlying
system- the middle atmosphere. Therefore, advancement of assimilation
techniques requires interaction of assimilators with dynamicists,
chemists and users of assimilation products. Thus, this workshop
aims to bring these various groups together. While contributions
from all aspects of middle atmosphere (chemical and dynamical) data
assimilation are sought, a few key areas will be highlighted. The
following experts were invited to broaden our understanding of the
true atmospheric system, highlight issues with assimilated products
and help focus discussions in these areas:
• International Polar Year (IPY): Gloria Manney
• Stratosphere-Troposphere coupling: Mark Baldwin, Adam
Scaife
• the Mesosphere: Charles McLandress
The SPARC-IPY workshop will bring together the participants and
collaborators in the SPARC-IPY activity, to assess plans and capabilities
and to discuss synergies and science outcomes. The theme of SPARC-IPY
is vertical coupling from troposphere to mesosphere in the polar
vortices (in both hemispheres), in terms of both dynamics and chemistry.
As a major component of SPARC-IPY concerns the production and analysis
of data assimilation products under the auspices of the SPARC DAWG,
it makes sense to hold the two workshops together. The common day
will focus on the use of the DA products, while the fourth day will
focus on the measurement activities.

The workshops will be held at the Fields Institute in the University
of Toronto downtown campus. A block of rooms at the Holiday Inn
Toronto Midtown hotel has been reserved for participants. The
deadline for reserving a room is 30 April 2007. Registration
will be through the website above. Depending on funding, a small
meeting fee (up to $50 Cdn) may be charged. The deadline for
abstract submission is June 1, 2007. Please mark these dates
in your calendars.
