Abstract:
Certain individuals in a honey bee colony are able to identify and remove problematic brood. This behaviour is essential to the ability of the colony to fight infections such as Varroa by destroying mites before the are able to mature. We develop a model to predict the conditions under which colonies exhibiting hygienic behaviours are able to overcome varroa infection and whether diverting bees from their common duties to hygienic duties has an cost to the colony.
