We embed the dual of a principally polarized simple abelian variety into a Grassmannian by realizing the dual as a Hilbert scheme of divisors. Representing points of the Grassmannian as matrices, we give linear algebra algorithms for the arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction) on the dual abelian variety. The work was driven by questions arising from cryptography.
