Together with Ji and Saper, Kumar Murty and I computed the fundamental group of the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of a locally symmetric space. We noted that there was an intriguing similarity between our results and computations of the congruence subgroup kernel. However, no direct connection was demonstrated. In this talk such a connection will be explained.
