The Aviles-Giga functional is a 2D phase transition model where the phase field is a gradient. Understanding its sharp interface limit is an outstanding open problem, because the solutions of the eikonal equation that arise in the limit are not well understood. I will present regularity results for such solutions. This is joint work with F.Ghiraldin.
