Abstract:
On Monday, May 9, 2016, I will meet for the first time with the students in my summer semester Calculus I class. What do I know about my future students? What can I expect from them? What should I do to help them master challenging material? How many lectures, if any, should I "flip"? How often should I use clickers in my class? What should the role of online assignments be? Should I test my students’ progress through weekly in-class quizzes? Should I be my students’ “coach” or a “math therapist” or a strict disciplinarian or an older colleague and a role model? What are the “must know forever” concepts in this course? And … does any of this really matter?
