New Trends in Approximation Theory
A Conference in Memory of André Boivin
Description
In this conference, several prominent experts will be gathered to discuss the general scope of approximation theory and complex analysis. In particular, the main focus will be on the following topics:
- Holomorphic approximation in one, several or infinitely many complex variables
- Approximation by harmonic functions
- Approximation by solutions of elliptic partial differential equations
- Subharmonic approximations and extensions.
- Universality and hypercyclicity.
- Approximation in function spaces.
André Boivin was born in 1955 and completed his PhD thesis in 1984 at the University of Montreal under the supervision of Paul Gauthier. Subsequently he held postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA (working with Theodore Gamelin) and University College London. He was hired at the University of Western Ontario as an Assistant Professor in 1986, and he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1991, and then to Professor in 2004. In 2011, he was appointed as Chair of the Department of Mathematics. He was an influential supervisor for several masters students, five PhD students and two postdoctoral fellows. He gave tireless service to granting agencies and selection committees in Quebec and Ontario, and was a frequent conference organizer. Boivin’s research interests were in complex analysis and approximation theory. In particular, his main topics of investigation were approximation by holomorphic functions of one or several variables, approximation by harmonic functions, and by solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. He was the author of various insightful papers in these areas and had several collaborators in North America, Russia, Spain and Germany. His sudden death in 2014 as a result of a heart failure was a great shock for all of us. With great affection for André and profound regret for his passing, we devote the present workshop to his memory. |
