The scientific program is the foundation of the Institute. From thematic and focus programs to shorter workshops, seminars, and events, these activities are designed to enhance pure and applied mathematical research in the widest sense.

The students of today are the problem-solvers of tomorrow. At Fields we recognize the value of both inspiring and supporting young students at all levels in order to build a brighter future for our field. As the birthplace of JUMP Math, and the home of our Early Educator Development, Fields Undergraduate Summer Research Program (FUSRP) and Shared Graduate Course programs, Fields focuses on training and supporting future mathematicians at all stages of their development.

At Fields, we recognize the increasing use of applied mathematics outside of traditional fields. We create collaborative opportunities between industry, academia and government through initiatives like Fields Multiplier, a venture-driven program that provides support for mathematics-based R&D with a high potential for commercialization and through Cyber Connexion, an intensive cybersecurity upskilling program that gives diverse talent in Canada the skills to transition into high-demand cybersecurity careers.

Through Fields MAGIC helps build networks dedicated to solving some of the world’s hardest problems through mathematical modelling. Initiatives like Mathematics for Public Health (MfPH) bring together some of the country’s leading infectious disease modellers and public health policy-makers to rapidly respond to public health emergencies, while Mathematics for Climate Change (MfCC) is partnered with the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation (WICI) to help tackle our emerging climate crisis.
